” I survived because the fire inside me burned brighter than the fire around me. “

-Jonathan Graham

Everything you watch or read has a lesson in it . And some stories just kind of feel like an extension of yours. Have you experienced this ? If you have do tell me which books, movies or web series felt like as if they were an extension of your life? Or did you feel that any story’s main character resonated with you so much? This is because recently I did end up watching a series in which the main character just felt like an extension of myself. I felt as if someone had literally bore open my soul and shown me a mirror. Which series was it ? Read on to find out.

Synopsis: Keep Breathing is a six-episode limited series which narrates the painful tale of Liv, a lawyer based in New York who has to fight to keep herself alive when her plane crashes in a remote Canadian wilderness. Being a lone survivor, she is forced to fight not only the harsh conditions but also her inner demons which haunt her.

As, she struggles to keep herself alive in the unforgiving conditions of the forest, the story alternates between her present challenges and flashbacks that reveal her complicated past. These flashbacks reveal the reason behind her journey to Canada and explore her complicated relationships with her parents and her romantic partner. So, will she be able to overcome her challenges as well as her inner demons or will she succumb to her fears and die ?

Assessment: The story depicts the isolation which Liv faces while she gets trapped in the forest as well as the one she faces in her personal life. It also explores the various traumas which Liv has faced as a child that she is not able to express herself as a person and is often shown to absorb herself in work as that helps her to divert her attention . She is also shown as someone who loves to party wild, another survival mechanism to let not her emotions take over her. But can traumas be healed and a person can push herself or himself in such a manner that it leads to a reconciliation with their past? This is a question which is explored throughout the series. People affect you in a lot of ways but do you let the experiences with them affect you as a person or do you let your inner light guide you to wisdom and hope. This I think is beautifully depicted through the character of Liv.

The storytelling approach is non-linear in nature due to which it can happen that you may not be able to make a lot of sense as the story goes back and forth between Liv’s immediate survival tension and memories that provide context to her character. But if you are someone who loves to piece the pieces of the puzzle together, you will be able to see a lot of hidden details which actually depict a lot of emotional turmoil as well as a lot of resilience.

The View: A show which might seem dark to some due to its heavy intense theme but it helps the viewer realize how confronting the outer world can help us confront internal fears. So, if you are a person who is averse to watching such dark-themed shows, you must avoid this one else it is a good watch as it gives insights into how one can overcome their fears.

Baap Dialogue: “Breathe. When everything is falling apart, just keep breathing. It’s the one thing you can control.”
