Have you been a rebel in your life ? Has there been any practices which you might have found very outrageous and yet your parents have asked you to follow it? But instead of following it to the T, you have ended up breaking the rules ? Well, if you have done that a lot of times, then I would love to hear your experiences about the same in the comments section. As far as I am concerned, I have done it a lot of times especially when I was growing up and still continue to do so if I do not find the rationale convincing. Some may call it a rebellious behavior while for some it may be a form of assertiveness while for some it may be an act of boldness. But the thing is when one does not accept the status quo as it is and does end up questioning things around him or her, it is then that you awaken the ability to change the world bit by bit if not entirely. The world is supposed to be a beautiful place yet there are practices and conventions which prevent the world from becoming one. So, when you want to create an impact around you, the very first thing I personally feel you undertake is try to observe the surroundings and then start questioning why does this take place or why does this happen? And after the questioning phase, you take actions which decide whether what is happening around you is right or wrong. Though, you cannot change people , but even though you start bringing small changes in you , you do feel a sense of accomplishment.Apart from that, you do start understanding yourself as a person well. And isn’t all the world’s wisdom, knowledge supposed to reside within us?

The reason why I am talking about being a rebel is because the pick which we are going to discuss this week has a very rebellious nature and wants to carve an identity for herself.Does this narrative sound familiar? It does because that is what people who are eager to change the world do isn’t it ?

About the book: ‘I am not your perfect Mexican daughter’ revolves around the life of Julia Reyes, who is a 15 year old girl residing in Chicago with her conservative Spanish family. She has recently lost her elder sister Olga to an accident and locks horns against her mother due to difference in opinions. On top of that, she is expected to take forward the docile daughter legacy which her sister Olga prided upon. A thing which she is entirely against the idea of. The reason being she really can’t stand the way traditional Mexican women behave. She is a girl who believes girls need to have a certain autonomy in their own lives . And she is not wrong in her thought process. After all, a girl’s life is subject to a lot of scrutiny. From the clothes she is supposed to wear, to the choices she is supposed to make to the skills she is supposed to know.

Supporting her, is her friend since childhood, Lorena who is more of the wild sort and loves to live in the moment . But considering the circumstances, will Julia be able to break free from the shackles and create the live she has always wanted? Or will she have to bow down to the conventions which have been the norm ?

Analysis: This is a book that tries to understand the mindset of a 15 year old teenage girl. It revolves around a lot of topics as well which are prevalent like mental health issues, teenage pregnancy( this is a huge affair in the Western parts of the world), privacy issues, freedom , discovering one self , the pressure of fitting in , the rebellious nature , being vocal about the things which you have always believed in etc. When you read through the book, you do find that life of a girl in the Western world especially if they belong to a conservative family is very similar to the lives of the girls in my country.

Julia was a complete misfit in her family because she challenged the status quo and believed in herself though the outer world failed to understand her. Her constant arguments with her mother might seem childish due to the age group she was in, but actually were her observations about how things were in the status quo. Her parents wanted her to become a person who worked in an office but she wanted to be a writer . This facet highlights the conflict between the practicalities and the passion of life a person has. As the book progresses, shocking details are revealed about the protagonist’s sister who was always supposed to be the perfect daughter of the family. This also highlights the fact that the golden child of the family might not be always the golden one .

The only negative thing about the book is that there are a lot of sexual references , a thing which is pretty normal in the Western world but can be problematic for some especially those who are averse to the idea.

Verdict: An interesting read which highlights a lot of issues a female faces. But despite the problems faced, the protagonist tries to discover her sense of self and challenge the status quo. This is a book which will resonate a lot with the people who have always questioned their surroundings and always had a strong belief in one’s own self despite the self doubt. Though it can be a bit dramatic , but I guess real life is supposed to be one big drama as well isn’t it? Do read to explore the mindset of an adolescent girl who goes through a lot considering the tender age she is supposed to be in . Do read it also for the bonding Julia and her crazy friend Lorena share. And most importantly , do read it for knowing the fact that the golden child is not always golden.Even they do have their own share of struggles and secrets. And that the supposedly black sheep or the misfit is right in his or her own way though their functioning might be a bit unconventional.

Apart from friendship, you also associate the month of August with the spirit of Independence. This is because my country, India attained independence in this month on 15th August after being ruled for nearly 150 years by the British. It is because of the endless sacrifice made by our freedom fighters that we are able to breathe freely in our country. It is because of their sacrifices that we are able to live peacefully in times when a lot of countries are facing uncertain times as well as situations. That is how freedom feels . This is because if we were not free, then imagine the atrocities we would have had to face. If we were not free, then could we have voiced our opinions as freely as we are able to in today’s times? But even though we are free, we are still lacking freedom in a lot of aspects. We have a long way to go before we are able to actually call ourselves free. Can you think of such areas where we still are bound by shackles which need to be broken ? Would love to hear about the same in the comments section. As of now, wishing all my fellow country mates in the country and residing abroad a very happy Independence Day in advance.

The reason why I am talking so much about freedom is that this week’s pick too tries to make us understand the power of freedom and hope with a backdrop of friendship which is supposed to be our central theme this month. It narrates the tale of human resilience when faced with adversity. This week’s pick is also supposed to be an all-time classic which up until now I hadn’t viewed. But after viewing it , I did realize why this movie was and is still considered to be a classic.

The Story line: The Shawshank Redemption narrates the story of Andy who is supposed to serve his life sentence at the Shawshank State Prison for murdering his wife and her lover. He soon makes friends with Red who is supposed to be in there for a long time. The inmates of the prison are under the control of a notorious warden named Samuel Norton who from the outside is a man who is a devout Christian but is a very crooked man.

Andy suffers humiliation from almost all the people in the prison yet doesn’t seem to break down and does try to focus his mind on things that matter to him. But will Andy be able to survive his time in the prison ? Or will he turn hysterical just like one of his prison inmates does? Also, will he be able to come out of the world or will he remain a prisoner in the Shawshank prison?

Scrutiny: This is a story which narrates the tale of life of inmates inside a prison. Life in general is supposed to be tough because you never know what curveballs you may need to face . On top of that, if you are under the control of someone else and a person who loves to be independent in nature, then life is even more tougher. But if you have the power of hope and the ability to look things from a different perspective as well as a highly resilient nature, then you can change the situation in your favour.

This movie also gives us the message that there is no problem which cannot be fixed. If you do have the determination and the ability to look things differently, then no matter how difficult the situation is , you do emerge victorious. It also highlights a very important message that injustice does meet its end in the most brutal manner.

The positives of the movie- brilliant acting by the leads along with a gripping story line and an awesome cinematography especially in the second half that you actually feel that you are transported to the Pacific. The negatives of the movie- too much swearing but that is understandable as what can you expect in a prison?

This movie also reminds me of passages which I had read in two books- Man’s Search for meaning and I dare. Both highlighted the plights of the people who were put in the prison. And I really could empathize as well as visualize because prisons do convert men into animals as man forgets the very base that defines him or her and that is emotions. This movie tries to highlight that reality and imagine what is a human being supposed to be without emotions?

The Sentiment: A very powerful movie which has an impact on the viewer and also gives a wonderful message of hope and resilience. Watch it for the powerful message it delivers as well as for the power packed acting by the two leads.

Also, do watch it for the level of friendship that the leads share in the movie. A movie which makes you feel that if you should have friends you should have friends like Andy and Red or have no friends at all. This is definitely a piece of work that is definitely worth your time. And if you have watched it, then maybe you can definitely go down the memory lane to revisit your memories .

“A friend is someone who makes it easy to believe in yourself.”

    -Heidi Wills

The spirit of friendship is celebrated every year in the month of August on the first Sunday. This is the time when we pay gratitude to our friends who have stood behind us like walls and the bond has stood the tests of time. While not all friendships stand the test of time, there are some which do and maybe they remain special to us. So, do you have any friends who have stood behind you like a wall throughout time ? If you do, don’t ever leave them as such friends are really tough to find. These words come from a person who has only had friends in the fictional world as the real ones are too busy to communicate or just faded away with time. And while new ones did take place of the old ones, the time spent with some people do remain etched forever in your lives . You do hope that you will be part of the happy times which we do have with certain special ones. But I guess just like love , friendship is fickle too or just taken for granted and maybe that is the reason why not all bonds are able to withstand the tests of time.

Well, thankfully, at least in the reel world, you do not get to see such fickle friendships . So, dedicating this month to celebrating the spirit of yaari and friendship in the reel world.Since, friendship too needs to be raised a toast just like other emotions isn’t it?Keeping that thought in the mind, lets delve into our latest pick.

Synopsis: This week’s pick celebrates the bond girls share with other girls as friends. While it is often said that two girls cannot stand each other and there are often so called catfights between them; majority of the times this statement turns out to be false. This is because there are friendships among girls which are pretty inspiring and everyone does long to have friends like that. This week’s pick has such friends whose friendship is pretty endearing as well as inspiring that they definitely give us friendship goals.

The Interns explores the life of three girls named Lily , Viveka and Ana who work as interns at a social media agency named Digital Diva. Lily and Viveka are complete opposites. Viveka is a person who is very sincere and dedicated at her work while Lily is a person who is spontaneous and carefree by nature and loves to stay in the spotlight. Lily is supposed to have a picture perfect life as she is a person who lives her life on her own terms the only exception being that she has a very dominating boyfriend who is too much of himself( in short, a major red flag ). Enter Ana who is a feminist nazi by nature according to other people though she loves to call herself as a person who is assertive by nature. So, what binds these three together is the situations which they land themselves in along with sharing the common boss. How they traverse their way through the corporate jungle and end up having each other’s back is what forms the rest of the story.

Assessment: An endearing tale which celebrates female friendships with lots of realistic references that any woman can relate to. For instance, the problem of suffering from intense mood swings during the monthly menstrual cycle or for example not having your voice heard despite having great ideas. Or being the second fiddle to a male chauvinist. Or dumping the person who is in love in with you for another person only to have a rebound relationship. It also highlights the mayhem and the chaos one navigates through in the corporate world. But it gives a message of hope that if you do have good friends in your life then you can survive any storm of life. This show also raises a toast to those people in your life who have your back irrespective of the situation in life. Apart from this, it also has a lot of comical scenes which will have you laughing out loud .

The negatives of the show- too much promotion by Whisper turns you off that you feel like bashing it. Also, Sugandha feels like a case of overacting due to her loud and crass behaviour. Another irritating factor is in the form of Lily’s boyfriend whom you feel like punching hard and also in the form of Viveka’s aunt. Shivankit Singh Parihar who generally plays good roles feels damn irritating in this one.

The view: A show which celebrates the spirit of female friendship with a dash of humour and drama is how you end up describing this experience. So, do watch it for the camaraderie shared by the three girls and how they navigate through the curveballs thrown by life. Also, do watch it for getting tips of how to navigate through the corporate jungle by keeping yourself sane because it is supposed to be a crazy world out there.

Quote-Unquote: “Screw conventions, screw relationships, screw deadlines.”(The realization the girls have after having a tussle with the dramas in their life.)

Que: Who does Viveka find for collaboration after an influencer cancels their contract?

    a. Rowdy Babua

    b. Silly-Lily

    c. Agnostic Dheer

    d. Queen of Fashion
