“Every reform, however necessary will by weak minds be carried to an excess, that itself will need reforming.”

    -Samuel Taylor Coleridge

When you hear of the word rain what do you get reminded of ? Well, for me the word rain itself not only associates with the beauty and the fertility but also a slew of diseases and dirt along with a dash of destruction. However, I personally feel the dash of destruction that the rain brings with it is a firm reminder to us by Nature that if we try to mess with the cycles of Nature, Nature will unleash its fury and keep us grounded. But are we wise enough to listen to the advice offered by Nature is a thought that always keeps on popping in my head every rainy season?Maybe we should be but we are not even though we are made of it . So, if its raining in your area, please do keep yourselves safe and do take proper measures to ensure that you do not feel under the weather.

The reason why I am talking about the rains because that is what is the weather is in my area and while I do feel locked up , it does give me an opportunity to express about the same. And while you do see the season being celebrated in the movies and in the lyrics of many songs, it is altogether a different feeling when you do end up reading a book describing the season. So, do tell me your favorite book which celebrates the rainy season? I would love to hear about the same in the comments section.

Since, the rains will not stop for another two months, lets not cry over it and instead try to enjoy the weather by delving into a pick which has the same backdrop as the weather outside. Perhaps who knows, this might end up on your reading list next. Do read on …

About the book: Rain is a short story written by William Somerset Maugham. It revolves around a certain Mr. and Mrs; Davidson who are introduced by a Dr. Macphil. They are on a ship to Apia which has taken a halt at Pago Pago, Davidson is a missionary who is on a duty to salvage the uncivilised and teach them to be proper Christians. They are forced to take refuge on the island due to a serious outbreak of measles. Due to this, they end up staying with a trader on the island who runs a lodge.

The heavy rains play a spoilsport due to which both the Macphils and Davidsons have to end up staying indoors. The Davidsons talk about the severity of the work undertaken by them. Also, staying with them on the same lodge is a woman named Miss Thompson. One day, the sound of gramophones and men is heard from her room. This distresses Mr. Davidson and he decides to stop her activities. Will Mr. Davidson be able to fulfil his mission of transforming Miss Thompson or will something stop him from doing so?

Analysis: This is a story that is pretty controversial and tries to explore the ugly side of Christianity. It makes a mockery of how Christian missionaries make it a mission to travel overseas and try to impose their teachings. But while undertaking the same, they fail to recognize the fact that they are destroying the tradition and belief of other people. The indigenous people instead of being reformed are forced into poverty and misery due to the sins that were committed in the name of God. It also highlights the racial superiority that the White people felt who never considered themselves to be wrong. It also highlights the fixed mindset of a missionary who feels that the only way people can be reformed through is by punishment or confession. It also highlights the fact that the world cannot be viewed in terms of complete white and black but it also has shades of gray. What might be a sin in the eyes of a person might just be a way of living of another.

Another contentious point it tries to highlight is the lack of intimate nature the Davidsons had in their lives. Humans are creatures with desires which are as normal as breathing and eating. While religion can play a role to suppress the desires up to an extent because it is ultimately in the hands of a human being of how to deal with his or her desires.

Verdict: A story that tries to highlight various issues like a battle between tradition and belief, a battle between desires and morales, a battle between what is right and what is wrong and ultimately a battle between tyranny and freedom is how this short story can be summed up. It also highlights how the so called keepers of the religion end up exploiting the people in the name of reforming. Do read it if you want to explore the complex web of human emotions and how religion is not that upright as it seems. Also, do read if you are a lover of short stories and are running short of time.

“Dad you are like a dictionary- full of knowledge, but also outdated and occasionally used as a paperweight.”

    -Anonymous

Remember the times when you were small and your parents especially your father taught you a lot of things. And you used to have a feeling deep down in your heart what a genius your father is. This was especially true when he fixed things without the help of a mechanic. But as times changed, so did technology rapidly and as age started catching up, he just found it a bit difficult to figure things out. And that is the time when he started looking up to his children for help in overcoming the technological gap. After all, one needs to keep up with times isn’t it? Also, if you do not keep up with the times, then you do seem pretty outdated . Besides, who wants to look outdated . Our parents do love to keep up with their children which is sort of welcoming but also a bit challenging at times. This week’s pick revolves around the same .

Synopsis: Tech Conversations with Dad revolves around two sons Chitvan and Jeetu teaching their fathers the nuances of the technology that is prevalent in today’s times. What could be seen as an exercise of a bonding between a father and a son turns out to be a demanding experience for both. Will the two sons be able to navigate their fathers through the technological jigsaw puzzle? Or will they end up being exasperated?

Assessment: This is a show which has some adult content in it so it is necessary to maintain some discretion for the same. But it is interesting to note that the technology which we sometimes take for granted as a tech-savvy generation that can prove a bit difficult to our parents. And that is obvious because it takes time and patience to figure things out. Also, with the pace, advances in technology are made, it does sometimes seem as if you are on a mad ride. So, it is heartening that awareness is made about the same in a comic manner. This is also a show which explores the relationship a father shares with his son , some of them too relatable that you end up laughing a lot and appreciating the brains behind the show.

Gajendra Rao steals the show as Jeetu’s father as he ends up asking a plethora of questions to his son which adds to his son’s frustration but also expresses the emotions a father has for his child. Also, the topics which seem to be a taboo or too brazen are dealt with great delicacy which is a rarity in a time where cheap humor and double-meaning dialogues have become prevalent. This surely comes as a welcoming breeze.

Also, the fact that it is a short series with mini episodes makes you feel super relaxed about the same unless the other times when you actually end up having to squeeze a lot of time to finish a web series. Believe me I really have to do it a lot of times thanks to the thought at the back of my mind your readers and subscribers are waiting. And you are accountable to them darling😩. This sometimes causes a lot of pain and frustration as well. But I guess you do motivate yourself to kick out the complacency and try to deliver because the show must go on isn’t it? I can go on rambling about the same but maybe that will be a topic for some other day😝.

The view: Overall, a watch which lets you have a lot of laughs as well as make you fall in love with the characters. This one is a hidden treasure which celebrates the relationship between a father and a son in a hilarious manner. So, if you haven’t watched it yet do go and watch it and if you have watched it do revisit it again to induce some nostalgia. After all it will be a good break from the usual monotony.

    Rating: ***

“No love is greater than that of a father to his son.”

    -Dan Brown

Its the third Sunday of June so, I decided to raise a toast to all the lovely and amazing fathers out there . So, wishing all the fathers out there a very happy Father’s Day . You are your daughter’s first love and your son’s first hero. Thus, cheers for being an amazing human being. After all, it is not easy being a rock of the family. For those who might not have experienced the love of their fathers due to some or the other reason, I am sure there might be someone who might have played the role of a father figure in your life. Acknowledge their presence and make them feel valued and do thank them for the contribution they made to your lives. Not all father figures need to be defined by blood. Some are defined out of sheer respect as well .

Well, keeping the importance of the role fathers play in our lives, I decided to dedicate this month to the heroes who act as your constant source of strength and motivation. After all, just like mothers , even these heroes without capes need to be celebrated. Isn’t it? Hence, this week’s pick revolves around a father who tries to be a hero in the eyes of his son despite facing difficult times. This week’s pick celebrates the strength a father possesses for his family . This week recounts the amazing and emotional tale of Will Smith in the Pursuit Of Happyness.

Story line: The Pursuit Of Happyness is based on the real life story of Chris Gardner, who faced a lot of hardships and how he overcame them. Chris Gardner is a famous American businessman and a motivational speaker who struggled with tough times for nearly a year. He is a salesman who has invested his entire life savings in portable bone density scanners. The scanners help him to scrape by through his life but the time taken between the sales and the growing financial demands of the household creates tensions in his family. These tensions eventually leads to his wife leaving him to take care of their son alone. This is when Chris decides to take the biggest gamble of his life- to become a stock broker. But will his journey to be a stock broker be easy or will it end up as a failure? What are the challenges he faces in his journey to be a stock broker? Is he able to overcome them or will he put his and his son’s life in jeopardy? That is what forms the rest of the story.

Scrutiny: This is a movie which is pretty inspiring as well as heart-wrenching in nature. It highlights the length a father might go for his son . When you witness the struggles, Chris faces you just have one word in your mind- blessed. Blessed that you do have everything which we often tend to overlook and feel grateful about. Yet, a lot of times we are pretty complacent about life and tend to take things for granted which are a luxury to a lot of people. I literally had tears in my eyes but also a sense of pride for the resilience Chris showed. Maybe it is the power of hope which gives us the immense strength to fight our battles. The hope that the future will be bright and that our dreams can be a reality if we are willing to fight for it.
Will Smith shines as Chris and so does Thandiwe Newton who portrays the picture of an estranged wife. The movie also highlights one important fact- that while money might be just a piece of paper but it is also very crucial when it comes to running a household. It highlights how lack of money leads to problems in domestic life especially if children are involved because you need to take care of them as well until they are ready to stand on their own feet.

The Sentiment: A movie which pays tribute to all the struggles a father goes for his child, this one though an oldie will inspire you a lot. This one will also fill your heart with immense gratitude for the man that provides for your family without any complaints and yet does not crib for doing the same. So, do watch it for the struggle a father undergoes for his family but also for the life lessons it provides. Then maybe you will witness your life in a much different light. And this is a movie which if you need a dose of inspiration must be viewed again and again because then that might help to crib less about the hardships one faces in life. Also, do watch it for the beautiful relationship shared by a father with his son despite the tough times. That will move you as well as bring a huge smile on your face.
