• When dreams come true…(1)

“The biggest adventure you can ever take is to live the life of your dreams.”

    Oprah Winfrey

He belonged to a poor family. A family which used to do odd jobs to provide for its sustenance. He always longed to come out of the vicious cycle of poverty which gripped his family. He wanted to become one of the most famous chefs in the world. The reason was simple: he simply loved to cook. But who apart from his mother could understand his passion for cooking? He never had the support of his father who was content being poor. Instead his father used to mock him for seeing a dream which seemed impossible and what according to him was a job done by the ladies of the household. But, the fire in him burned brighter each day as he had posters cut from glossy magazines of chefs who had made it to the top in the fascinating world of culinary world. You might be wondering if the family did not have enough means to sustain themselves where did he get those pictures from ? Well, that is where his best friend came into the picture. He was the son of a scrap dealer who collected magazines from various households. There was this one family who had the subscription of a cooking magazine, What’s Cooking. This magazine was kind of a window to everything related to the field of cooking . It had interviews from the top chefs, the best places to eat , the best recipes submitted by chefs and readers alike.

In an age where children like him were attracted to film magazines or comics, he spent his time in reading this. It was thanks to his education that he could make sense of some parts in the magazine but some parts were unfathomable to him. This is where his English teacher , who was a kind person and loved him came to his rescue. The teacher’s language skills and the school’s Internet facility helped him to make sense of the magazine. Did he neglect his studies for his passion ? No, he was a very responsible child who not only did his studies diligently but also supported his mother in the small catering business she ran. It was this sight of his mother in the kitchen along with the aromatic smell of the spices which wafted from their small kitchen which made him fall in love with cooking. So, he lent a helping hand to his mother as well as provided inputs to her as to how she could better the dishes she made. And in return, he was her what he jokingly called ‘her unofficial taster.’ This tasting activity which he undertook for his mother helped him acquire a sharp palette as well as develop a keen sense of smell.

Even though he wanted to pursue cooking, life did want to test him to check how passionate he was about his dream. As soon as he finished his senior secondary exams, he wanted to enroll in the Culinary Academy. The Culinary Academy was a gateway to pursue your dream of entering what was known as the club of elites -the Nomary Bjorg. But was it an easy path ?After all there is a price you need to pay if you want to achieve something. Also, there were many applicants who applied to the academy every year. But only the few lucky ones made the cut. And from those few, there were a handful who made it to the elite club. The Culinary Academy prided itself for having such tough evaluation standards as they wanted to differentiate diamonds from glass stones. Anyone could be a glass stone but very few could be diamonds. Will our hero make the cut? What is the price that he will pay for his dreams? Will his dreams come true and will he be able to prove his father wrong ? Stay tuned as this piece continues next week. Till then take care, enjoy the rains or whatever weather it in your country (we are experiencing showers here ) and have a rocking week ahead.

  • From Despair to Hope

“Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness.”

    Desmond Tutu

She was a post graduate in English Literature. It was her childhood dream to become a writer. But due to the curve balls thrown to her by life, she was struggling to meet her ends meet. She had been in a struggling phase most of her life. But her consistent efforts and persistence made her master most of the skills. However, there was one skill that she could not master and that was the skill of writing. It wasn’t that she lacked ideas. Instead, she had the most novel ideas, a vibrant vocabulary and a vivid imagination. But she lacked something according to the publishers of her novels. That was the reason why why she could not be a best seller. This constant disappointments had begun taking a toll on her mental health. The love which she had for writing was slowly being reduced to a feeling of exhaustion. Though, she did not claim to be an expert storyteller, but according to the feedback received by her from her loved ones, her writing did resonate with them. This encouragement had led her to pursue the field of English Literature. This field according to her, were the gateways of the imagination of the human mind.As she reminisced her past, a feeling of desperation began to seep on her. This feeling of desperation slowly turned into apathy and depression which led her to neglect her typewriter which was one of her most prized possessions. The drafts of her upcoming novels seemed to eat dust as she just lay hopelessly on her bed looking at the ceiling of her room and sighing. This nonchalant attitude of hers began disturbing the characters of her published novels as well as those which were in the drafting stage.

One of the characters named Miss Penny decided to call an emergency meeting with all the characters the writer had developed. The writer heard some strange rumbling sounds from her workspace. Startled, she began to look around to track the sources of the sound. While, Miss Penny, like a CEO of a company presided the meeting with the other characters. She said in a voice that commanded authority, “Our creator is a nice human being. She created us with great care and research. Yet she seems sad and disinterested. What could be the reason behind her such attitude?” Mr. Shylock, another character replied, “I know the reason behind her such attitude. Our creator does put in the hard work yet her writing does not resonate with her audience.” “Oh!” said Miss Penny, “how can we help her out? I cannot afford to see her in such a state. She seems to have immense potential in her and yet she gave up. What a shame! Miss Sally you are supposed to be the very first character she created. Can you suggest something?” Miss Sally was a young, pretty girl who had immense energy and was a person who loved to help others a lot. She gave it a thought and said, “Maybe our creator should just continue practicing her art. This is supposed to be the starting phase of her career. Even though she is struggling to break even, one day she will be in a better position due to the persistence and practice she would have undertaken. After all, writing is a skill. There is nothing that a man cannot achieve with consistent efforts.” Mr. Pollock raised his hand to say something. He was a nice, jolly guy who was very charming by nature. He said, “Maybe, our creator should take a masterclass by the most famous writers? This can be arranged with the help of her literary agent.By doing so, she will be able to take notes from the stalwarts as to how to make her writing more refined and more engaging.”

The writer who had reached her workspace was marveled by the brainstorming session that was held in her workspace. She felt overwhelmed with emotions as she saw the characters which she had created with lots of love giving her the same love which she had given to them while crafting them reciprocate the same to her by taking care of her when she was at her lowest. She tried to hide the same and said, “That’s a brilliant idea. ” The characters appeared to be dazzled at first. But they were happy that their creator had listened to their talk.

Maybe they were right about not giving up on the thing that she enjoyed she thought. This made her decide to give her love another shot. She took upon herself to write everyday and read more. She also decided to explore her favorite authors and study their writing style. As the days passed, she began fixing the shortcomings in her writing. Though, she has not created any ripples in the writer’s space yet she is optimistic that maybe one day she will be counted as one of the legends after all she did not give up on what she loved the most. After all this was her way to thank her creations who had restored her confidence back even though she had not made it big.

“Great salespeople are relationship builders who provide value and help their customers win.”

    Jefferey Gitomer

What makes a person a great success or something good at the task he or she does ? Is it talent or is it hard work or is it the mark sheet or is it the inherent qualities of a person which may be something like perseverance or creativity or passion or leadership or honesty? Well, the answer to this question does not lie in one word as it is often a combination of the qualities possessed by a person which makes him or her stand out in professional life. What are the qualities possessed by you which make you stand apart in your professional life ? Do tell me in the comments section. The reason for this is there is no such individual who does not possess any quality which does not define him or her in his or her professional as well as personal lives. Every individual is unique and it is this uniqueness which resides in him or her that makes him or her stand out. This week’s pick also revolves around one such person? Are you eager to find out more? Read on…

Story line: Meet Harpreet Singh Bedi, a B.Com graduate who just barely scrapes through his final year examinations by securing approximately 39 percent. After graduation, instead of going for further studies, he decides to become a salesman . He applies for the post of a salesman with a corporate computer assembly and service company named AYS. Despite being rejected by the sales manager, he manages to land the job and starts learning the tricks of the trade from Nitin. Soon, he is given a major field visit but is taken aback when the manager of the company asks for a kickback. This makes him write a complaint against the manager, not knowing the fact that the manager he has complained against is a big client and this can land him in a soup. After landing in the soup due to his actions and facing condemnation from his seniors, Harpreet starts feeling lonely and humiliated. As days pass, and after being barred from making any field visits, he gets an opportunity in the form of a lead given by his colleague Koena. After making the field visit and nearly disappointing the very lead he which had given a lease of fresh life to his nearly extinct career, he soon realizes that the success of a sale depends on the experience provided to the customer and not by giving incentives. This realization makes him take a bold step- to start his own startup named Rocket Sales Corporation within the company he is working. The rest of the story deals with how their startup function and what are the challenges faced by them. Will the startup started by them tide over the tough times or will they face a setback?

Scrutiny: This movie tries to explore the life of an individual who is supposed to be a person who is very upright and naive not knowing how to deal with the world around him. For him, what matters is the values he has been brought up with. But as time progresses, he learns that the world rarely functions on the values he has been brought up with. This naive yet upright attitude of his lands him in a soup initially and later on proves to be useful for him as he sets up his firm. The movie tries to teach you lessons without being too preachy which are really useful for future entrepreneurs. Even though the story line is crisp, there are certain chinks in the story line. Like for instance, the female leads of the movie are just reduced to either being dolls or being a subordinate. This is despite the fact that they do try to play an equally important role in the movie. Shazahn Padamsee who made a debut with this film could have been given a better portrayal instead of being reduced to being a pretty doll face. However, the portrayal of the issues faced by an employee in a corporate office seemed realistic. So, a huge applause for that aspect.

But there was one thing which kind of irked me – the portrayal of the character of Gauahar Khan and unfortunately a sad reality. Receptionists of the company are just pretty faces of the company and nothing else. This is despite the fact that they are the ones who are in charge of managing a lot of aspects to ensure the smooth functioning of the company. Also, the fact that she is an independent woman yet she lives in the fear of her husband felt so degrading even though it was supposed to mirror the society which we are supposedly living in(for the non-Indians, this is how the supposedly Indian society functions where more than your well being you have to worry about what others will think. Though, this mindset is undergoing a change, yet the social conditioning exists. ). Also, the details as regards to the corporate world are spot on. Incredible work done by the team who was behind the set design.

What was interesting was the character portrayed by Manish Chaudhari who plays the role of Sunil Puri. He is the person who is supposed to be a supportive man but turns into a career destroyer for Harpreet Singh and then does a u-turn to redeem his career again. Multiple shades of human nature I guess does not make a man completely saint nor a sinner. But the fact that he could see the mistake he committed and rectify it by putting his ego aside made the man standout in the film. So, yes a huge shout out to him for portraying the shrewd yet wise businessman . This movie is supposed to be one of Ranbir Kapoor’s finest works. Had he chosen stories like this, believe me he would have been one of the most bankable actors the Hindi film industry would ever had.

The Sentiment: A movie which you can enjoy with your family on a weekend. After all it is a story of a supposed to be an underdog who outsmarts the stalwart and teaches him a great lesson in humility. Watch it for the standoff between the underdog and stalwart. Watch it for the inspiration that you can be anything if you set your heart to. Watch it for a great performance by Ranbir Kapoor (not a big fan but can watch him in some stories). It is definitely worth your time.
