    Author: Charlotte Perkins Gilman

    Genre:Short story fiction

“I know what its like to be afraid of your own mind.”

    Spencer Reid

Continuing with the series revolving around women as part of the International Women’s Month, this week’s pick might not be for the faint-hearted. The reason why I say this is because this one deals with an issue which was supposed to be a stigma until recently and revolves around a woman dealing with it. The issue I am talking about is mental health. Mental health is an issue which apart from women empowerment is close to my heart. The reason being simple I know what it feels like when you are not in proper shape mentally and people not taking it seriously. Lord Krishna in Bhagwad Gita underlines the same in the 6th shloka of 6th chapter. Those who are not familiar with what the Bhagwad Gita is,the answer is it is a part of the Mahabharata where Lord Krishna delivers a spiritual discourse to his friend Arjuna during the war.To put it in the words of him, he says, “Your mind is your great friend if you control it, but your mind is your greatest enemy if it controls you.” Such is the power of our minds which has the ability to create whatever we desire the good as well as the bad depending upon how we let our minds work.

Generally, I would have picked up a long read and read it and reviewed it.But this time, I genuinely fell short of time due to me juggling various roles. So, this time it was a very short read which was pretty thought- provoking . The reason for this is the book which I am about to talk about talks about a time period in which mental health was not considered serious and was equated to being mad. This was because in olden days mental health was considered as a taboo. Its a shame that people suffered a lot in the olden days. But thank God we live in the times where it is okay to be not okay.We still have a long way to go when it comes to addressing mental health issues but its heartening to know that we have at least started addressing and taking steps for the same. So, presenting to you all the pick of the week- a short story named the Yellow wall paper. The name might sound strange but you will find it why it is appropriate as you read on.

About the book : The Yellow Wallpaper is a collection of journal entries narrated in the first person. It is a journal written by a woman whose doctor husband has rented an old mansion for the summer. The doctor husband forbids his wife to work or write and encourages her to eat well and have plenty of rest as she is suffering from a slight hysterical tendency- a thing which was common during that times. But as the story progresses, we witness what can be called a descent into madness as she has nothing to do but witness the yellow wall paper in her room.

What causes her to fall in such state and why does her doctor husband to faint one day as she refuses to unlock her door one day is a matter to be discovered as you unfold the pages of the book. No spoiler alerts I promise.

Analysis: The book is considered as a revolutionary in many cases . This is because the author has expanded upon many issues such as the lack of life outside the home and the oppressive forces of a highly patriarchal society. This can be highlighted in the scene where the narrator or the main protagonist despite knowing her best interests is shut down as well as ignored by her doctor husband . Women were depicted mentally fragile despite the fact that they were the ones who endured the most. This story is also revolutionary as it was written as a form of defiance. Women were not allowed to write as it would lead to forming an identity and become a form of defiance. But this writer defied the norms and paved way for writers such as Alice Walker and Sylvia Plath who were revolutionary writers in their times.

This story is also revolutionary in the way that it led to change in the treatment which was earlier prescribed by doctors. Earlier doctors used to prescribe a strict rest cure regimen which involved only bed rest and a blanket ban on activities like painting, writing and reading. But Charlotte Gilman after being close to a nervous breakdown challenged the doctor’s diagnosis and started writing again. This work was a piece of protest against the existing medical practices to cure depression . I really can imagine what guts the author must have had to defy an existing medical practice and be a trend setter. Hats off to her undying conviction in herself which proved her right. This is the reason why one should read this revolutionary piece of work.

This book might appear to be scary for some as the way the author has portrayed her figments of imagination through the protagonist. If you are the one who is easily scared by the vivid descriptions which might play with your mind then it is highly recommended to not read this piece. Another thing which you might encounter is that maybe you might not understand the piece of literary work and might have to re-read the story again to interpret it. These are the only negative things which I could find.

Verdict: This one is a must read for all the feminists out there like me :p Do give it a read to witness how women were in the 19th century. Do give it a read as this is symbol of defiance as this story paved a way for other female authors who were groundbreaking in their own ways. Do give it a read if you are a person who loves to delve into the understanding of the human mind. Do not read if you are the one who is scared of vivid portrayals. Do not read if you are not comfortable with reading stories which have a feel of horror but are not.

    Rating: *** and a 1/2 stars

  • “There is no limit to what we as women can accomplish.”

    Michelle Obama

People say it is a superpower to be a woman, After all, a woman has the strength to handle things single-handedly in a manner that no one can manage. After all she is expected to perform a lot of roles. If she is a homemaker, for instance and is living with her in-laws after marriage, she is expected to cater to the needs of all the members in the family without getting tired. Her day can start as early as 4 or 5 in the morning and finish late in the night. Thus putting a blind eye to the so called concept of ‘me time’ because where does she get the time to have some time out for herself? The moment she sits down or wants to sit down to rest for sometime, someone or the other will make some or the other demand which snatches the same. This is despite the fact that others can get the job done by themselves. This is not a scene in every household I will say but this is what can be expected in a household with a patriarchal mindset. Majority of the households in India belong to this category where women are not respected nor are they viewed equally as their male counterparts. Women too feeling helpless become cogs in the wheel of the same thought process instead of standing up for themselves and ultimately pass down the same to their daughters and sometimes even granddaughters.

It is not supposed to be in the nature of a woman to question the social norms. They are just supposed to act the way they are told . If they question they are termed as outspoken or way too rebellious. How many of us have actually experienced this? Being a woman raised in somewhat patriarchal society I have faced this first hand. Maybe that is the reason why I haven’t conformed myself to the societal bias. Personally speaking I do not find it wrong because I am a woman who is more capable by being a single than being dependent on someone. I am a firm advocate of gender equality though some people might call me a radical feminist also. But I am okay with the tags as I personally feel that there should be proper division of work in all spheres of life. So, dear men if you think your homemaker wife does not do anything and just laze around watching TV try putting yourself in her shoes one day. Or if you think that your female colleagues are less deserving than you please think again. They are much smarter than you guys just don’t show it .And maybe there’s a problem with your mindset which thinks that she lands the projects just because of her looks then you are dead wrong. Girls and women put in double double hours and have the ability to get the work done .

But there are men who have been incredible role models and have supported their wives or other female family members of their family. Kudos and hats off to them for being a ray of hope and a spark of light and being the harbingers of equality. It is because of you that we women somewhat find the strength to fight our battles as well. It is because of you that we women think of breaking the societal norms as well as the glass ceiling. Thanks to you that we aspire to be the best version of ourselves. So, I do think you guys deserve credit too. As for the men who are still stuck in the mindset that a woman should only take care of you maybe it is high time you wake up and change yourselves as times are changing. This is because if you ever have a daughter and you do want to be a superhero after all daughters do look upon their dads as their superheroes and if their dad advocates some old fashioned thought then better be ready for a huge lecture on feminism especially if the daughter is a badass or of progressive thought process;0. So, dear parents teach your daughters that it is important to gain the practical skills of life first and then look for a life partner who stands by your thought process and supports you in all endeavors and if shit is thrown your way it is not okay to tolerate it. But instead learn to speak up. A lot of times it has been observed that women do not speak up or are silenced either by their family members or by their partners. Why so? Why should a woman make unnecessary compromises or adjustments even though it might not be good for her mental and physical health? So, this women’s month promise to keep your women in good shape physically and mentally. After all, women are the skilled architect of society.

March is considered as International Women’s History Month. A time which celebrates and recognizes the amazing contributions of women throughout the country. So, this month expect a lot of women oriented blog posts, as I a fellow woman raises the toast to some of the most amazing women in real and reel life. This month lets celebrate the women in our lives and make them feel special.

So, this week’s pick celebrates a woman in reel life who in her younger days used to be one of the topmost players in the sport of Kabaddi. But then family happened and so did her future dreams went up in the smoke? But will she be able to revive her dreams? Read on further-

Story line : Panga narrates the story of Jaya Nigam who was a former Kabaddi champion but now works as a middle class railway reservation counter clerk. She lives with her husband and a 7 year old son Adi. Despite having a supportive family, Jaya regrets to quit the sport as motherhood embraced her. After learning the same from his father, Adi pushes her to return to the sport. Will Jaya give in to her son’s demands? Will she be able to challenge the stereotypes of the society? Will she be able to challenge the limits and return to what was her first love?

Scrutiny: This movie is an emotional roller coaster story of a middle class Indian woman who in order to give dreams wings will have to face it all- stereotypes regarding to age, societal pressures of family responsibility and most importantly changes in her body post motherhood. Will she be able to outstretch herself and if so how is she going to?

Coming to the scrutiny part, an interesting story line with thunderous acting chops by Kangana Ranaut and Jassi Gill. After watching this one, singles like me will have their expectations high as regards to their future partners :p The struggle a mother goes through is portrayed beautifully and realistically. There are some unrealistic scenes like for example how do you convince your parents especially your mother so easily for marriage? This is such a hilarious scene that I ended up laughing out aloud. It was such an unrealistic scene in such a realistic movie.

The Sentiment: This one should be definitely on your watch list. This one highlights the struggles of a mother who sacrifices it for the sake of her family. But it seems that it is the love of her family which brings her back to the game. Watch it for the thunderous performance by Kangana Ranaut and Jassi Gill. I personally feel Jassi Gill should have been awarded the National Award as he in my opinion was the main show stealer. His act of being a lovely and a supportive husband definitely raised the bar as regards to husband goals are concerned. Watch it for the struggles Jaya faces as she struggles to make a comeback. Watch it for the undying spirit of a woman. And lastly watch it to celebrate the women in your lives.

    Rating: ****

Quote Unquote: Saari badi badi baatein women empowerment ki… main ek maa hoon aur maa ke koi sapne nahi hote hai.” (Jaya to Prashant)[ All big talks on women empowerment. I am a mother and a mother never has any dreams.]
